The hickory table top products come in a few different stains for you to choose from. Hickory Stick is a medium reddish-brown with notes of the lighter cream sapwood. Rustic Hickory is a light-to-medium color that is mainly golden or yellowish-brown. For a mix of both styles, our Traditional Hickory features some reddish hues and creamier colors, without the overriding golden tones of Rustic Hickory. No matter the stain choice, these high-quality plank countertops feature warm tones that bring the richness of the great outdoors into your interior design. All hickory table tops are customized to your specifications with several edge grain options to choose from. We cut each top to your custom width and length of the countertop and can even add cutouts for your project needs. We recommend the hardwax oil finish for our hickory tops, but a commercial finish is also available.

Hickory butcher block countertops are prized by homeowners and interior designers for their unique coloring, prominent wood grain patterns, and durability. The sapwood (the wood closest to the center of the tree) is white or cream-colored, while the heartwood (the wood layers just under the bark) tends to be light to medium brownish-red. A popular type of hickory wood, known as Calico hickory, features both the tones of the reddish-brown heartwood and the paler sapwood. These are highly sought after for their unique appearance.

The majority of hickory trees are found in North America, and have been historically used for objects that require strength and durability. This includes tool and implement handles, ladder rungs, and sports’ equipment. The hickory wood species also has good bending properties making it the ideal choice for furniture.

Low Maintenance

Hickory wood countertops are a low maintenance choice that will stand the test of time with proper cleaning and care. We recommend choosing the food safe mineral oil finish, but we also have a more durable commercial grade varnish. Both top surface options are food prep safe, while the commercial grade finish products seal the wood to prevent water from penetrating the surface. A soft towel soaked in warm water and dawn dish soap works well for daily cleaning and prevents the finish from breaking down over time.

Durability

Hickory is exceptionally heavy, hard and shock resistant and is among the strongest of woods native to the United States. The durability of hickory is typically better than other wood types, such as white oak or hard maple. If not machined properly by expert woodworkers, it has even been known to blunt machinery.

Appearance

Hickory has a unique wood grain pattern that makes it stand out compared to other wood species. While it usually has a straight grain, hickory can also feature waves and can vary from piece to piece. Hickory typically has a more rustic appearance and stains well. This wood also finishes to a luminous shine.
